Fia Perera

Fia Perera is an activist and award-winning writer and director whose work examines identity, belonging, and transformation through emotionally resonant storytelling. With over 15 Off-Broadway productions and multiple television credits including The Invitation for Discovery and the award-winning pilots Do the Voice, Baby Steps, and BAD ALICE, Perera has established herself as a distinctive voice in contemporary cinema and theater. Her feature documentary Paul & Trisha: The Art of Fluidity, now streaming on Apple and Amazon, garnered critical acclaim for its intimate portrait of two 77-year-old British artists living in one gender-fluid body and was recognized for its nuanced exploration of identity across generations. Her latest film MERMAID provides both representation and emotional resonance for diverse audiences, while her next feature SWIMMING NAKED—which dives into the hilarious and complex 30-year mother-daughter relationship—is currently in development.

Perera’s path to the director’s chair was anything but conventional. After training as an actor at NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ Circle in the Square program—where she met Mary Birdsong, who plays Clarita in MERMAID—she faced the industry’s narrow definitions of what a character actress should be. When a soap opera audition required her to squeeze into a tiny skirt and embody a size-zero sexpot, Perera made a pivotal choice: she would create her own work instead. That decision launched 18 one-woman shows that ran Off-Broadway, including the critically acclaimed Alice Out From Under, which ran for a year to rave reviews. Time Out New York called her “ferociously talented,” and a career built on her own terms was born.

After relocating to Los Angeles, Perera continued writing screenplays while also pursuing stand-up comedy, performing at the Improv and Laugh Factory and eventually headlining as a touring comedian. This multi-disciplinary background—intense actor training, solo performance, and stand-up—became her secret weapon as a director. She learned how to work intimately with actors, how to find humor in stressful situations (an invaluable skill on indie film sets where anything can happen), and how to mine comedy from tragedy.

At the heart of Perera’s work is a belief in duality: that comedy and drama don’t exist without each other, that characters are most compelling when they have jagged edges and unexpected humor, and that even in our darkest moments, there’s always a silver lining. Her characters are rooted in reality, flawed and complex, but they’re also funny in their own right—a beautiful combination that brings depth and humanity to every project she creates. With multiple feature films and television projects in development, her work continues to bridge artistic vision with meaningful cultural impact.
